Indian Folk Dance Classes
Our Indian folk dance classes at Sriezaayogshala give yoga retreat guests and visiting travellers a lively, hands-on introduction to one of India's most expressive cultural traditions. Set in Rishikesh, this 4-day program teaches regional folk dance styles in a beginner-friendly format, blending physical movement with genuine cultural context rather than just choreography.
Whether you're balancing this with a yoga course or visiting Rishikesh purely for the cultural experience, these classes are designed to be approachable, energising, and genuinely fun with no dance background required.

Why Learn Indian Folk Dance Here
India's folk dance traditions are as regionally diverse as its languages and cuisines, with each state carrying its own distinct rhythms, costumes, and storytelling traditions. These classes move beyond the handful of Bollywood-style moves most visitors recognise, introducing participants to dances like Garba from Gujarat and Bhangra from Punjab, along with the cultural context and occasions these dances traditionally come from.
For guests already on a yoga retreat with us, these sessions offer a joyful, more playful counterpoint to the stillness and discipline of asana practice; many participants describe folk dance as waking up a different kind of energy in the body than yoga does, which makes the two complement each other nicely over the course of a retreat.
योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते॥
By being established in Yoga, O Dhananjaya, undertake actions, casting off attachment and remaining equipoised in success and failure. Equanimity is called Yoga.

What You'll Learn
Foundational Steps and Rhythm Work
Sessions begin with the basic footwork and rhythm patterns that underpin most folk dance styles, giving complete beginners a solid base before more complex sequences are introduced.
Garba and Circle Dance Traditions
Hands-on instruction in Garba, the popular Gujarati circle dance traditionally performed during festivals, focusing on the clapping patterns and group coordination that make it such a communal, joyful style.
Bhangra and High-Energy Folk Styles
Introduction to Bhangra, the energetic Punjabi folk dance known for its powerful arm movements and upbeat tempo — a favourite among participants looking for a more vigorous, cardio-style session.
Storytelling Through Movement
A look at how many Indian folk dances are built around storytelling — harvest celebrations, seasonal festivals, and devotional themes — giving participants a richer understanding of what they're actually performing.
Group Choreography and Performance Practice
By the later sessions, participants work together on a short group choreography, often performed informally for other retreat guests as a fun, low-pressure capstone to the program.

Who Should Join
These classes are well suited for:
- Yoga or wellness retreat guests looking for an energising, culturally rich complement to their practice
- Travellers visiting Rishikesh who want a hands-on cultural experience beyond sightseeing.
- Anyone curious about Indian dance traditions, regardless of prior dance experience
- Groups or families looking for a fun, shared activity during their stay.
No prior dance experience is required, and instructors adjust pacing based on the group's comfort level, so complete beginners and those with some dance background can both participate fully.
The Connection to Yoga and Movement
While folk dance and yoga might seem like opposites — one expressive and energetic, the other still and meditative — both share a deep cultural root in using the body as a tool for connection, celebration, and even spiritual expression. Many participants find that the physical confidence built in dance class carries back into their yoga practice, particularly around hip mobility, rhythm in vinyasa sequences, and simply feeling more at ease moving through space. For guests interested in exploring movement and embodiment further, ourAerial Yoga Teacher Training page covers another playful, body-centered specialization, and general background on India's regional dance traditions can be found through resources likeSahapedia's folk dance archive.
